Applications in Food & Beverages Confectionery and bakery products Functional and sports nutrition Plant-based alternatives Sauces and seasonings Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein. It is structurally similar to transferrin, a plasma iron transport protein; however, lactoferrin has a much higher affinity for iron (250 times). It is involved in iron sequestration and homeostasis, playing an important role in the prevention of anemia, which is important for overall health and immune function.
It enhances the body's natural defense mechanisms and can stimulate both innate and adaptive immune responses. It can be used to strengthen the immune system in people with weakened defenses (the elderly, children, chronically ill people), and as an antioxidant, helping to protect cells from oxidative stress and damage. Lactoferrin has antimicrobial properties that help fight viruses, bacteria and fungi. By tightly binding to the viral envelope protein, it prevents the fusion of the cell and the virus. It can also participate in the synthesis of antibodies and interleukins, lymphocyte proliferation and complement activation. Studies show that lactoferrin supplementation can reduce the incidence, frequency, and duration of respiratory tract infections, especially in infants and children. It may help treat symptoms and recover from respiratory infections, including the common cold and potentially COVID-19. Lactoferrin has anti-inflammatory properties and can bind and sequester lipopolysaccharides, preventing the activation of the pro inflammatory pathway, which may help reduce inflammation in a variety of conditions. Lactoferrin may promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria (eg, Lactobacillus et Bifidobacterium), thereby maintaining immune homeostasis in the intestinal mucosa. Some sources suggest that lactoferrin may play a role in stress management and promoting better sleep. Lactoferrin may help reduce acne and skin inflammation by: inhibiting the growth of bacteria, especially Propionibacterium acnes, by binding to the iron needed for their development; reducing the production of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β, while increasing the production of IL-10, an anti-inflammatory cytokine; reducing sebum secretion, which limits the environment favorable for acne. Infant Nutrition Lactoferrin Lactoferrin (LF) has a vital role in premium Infant Formulas (IF): Lactoferrin is a multifunctional glycoprotein that plays a crucial role in the immune system. Primarily found in human and animal milk, particularly in colostrum—the first milk produced after childbirth. Molecular weight: ~80 kDa, part of the transferrin family, known for iron-binding properties. Lactoferrin (LF) has a vital role in premium Infant Formulas (IF): Role in Infant Formlas (IF) In IF, bovine lactoferrin is included to mimic the beneficial properties found in human breast milk. Its incorporation serves several purposes: PROTECTION AGAINST INFECTIONS:Infants are particularly vulnerable to infections; lactoferrin helps provide passive immunity by protecting against various pathogens. IMPROVED IRON ABSORPTION:As lactoferrin aids in iron absorption, it can help prevent iron deficiency in infants who may not receive adequate amounts from other dietary sources. SUPPORT FOR GUT HEALTH:By promoting a healthy gut microbiota and preventing harmful bacteria from colonizing, lactoferrin contributes to better digestive health in infants. Biomanufactured LF can boost application opportunities in Infant Formulas (IF) In IF, bovine lactoferrin is included to mimic the beneficial properties found in human breast milk. In oral formulations, medium-chain triglycerides are used as the base for the preparation of oral emulsions, microemulsions, self-emulsifying systems, solutions, or suspensions of drugs that are unstable or insoluble in aqueous media, e.g. calciferol. Medium-chain triglycerides have also been investigated as intestinal absorption enhancers and have additionally been used as a filler in capsules and sugar-coated tablets, and as a lubricant or antiadhesion agent in tablets.

Stearic Acid

Stearic Acid (JP, Ph.Eur., USP), content ≥ 50%, GRAS CAS-No. 57-11-4

Emulsifying agent; solubilizing agent; tablet and capsule lubricant; viscosity-increasing agent.

Stearic acid is mainly used in oral formulations as a tablet and capsule lubricant (1-3%) or as the hardening agent in glycerin suppositories. Although it may also be used as a binder or in combination with shellac as a tablet coating as well as in enteric tablet coatings and as a sustained-release drug carrier.
In topical formulations, stearic acid is used as an emulsifying and solubilizing agent (1-20%). When partially neutralized with alkalis or triethanolamine, stearic acid is used in the preparation of creams. The partially neutralized stearic acid forms a creamy base when mixed with 5-15 times its own weight of aqueous liquid, the appearance and plasticity of the cream being determined by the proportion of alkali used.

Stearic acid also can be used in the production of stable nanoparticles for various topical and oral formulations (emulsions, oral liquids, creams, gels).

Odd Chain Fatty Acid C15:0

Pentadecylic acid
CAS-No. 1002-84-2

Higher intakes of odd-carbon fatty acids, such as C15:0, have been linked to lower mortality in some studies by reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, as it may help lower total cholesterol and glucose levels while improving insulin sensitivity. Some studies also suggest a lower risk of certain cancers with higher C15:0 levels. Pentadecylic acid is thought to help improve liver health biomarkers such as lower alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels, which have been linked to a lower risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Pentadecylic acid has potential longevity benefits: it activates AMPK and inhibits mTOR, which are key components of human longevity pathways. It also shares some activities with known lifespan-extending compounds such as rapamycin. At the cellular level, C15:0 may help strengthen cells and restore mitochondrial function.

Glyceryl Monostearate

Glyceryl Monostearate (Ph.Eur., USP, BP), GRAS CAS-No. 31566-31-1

Bioadhesive material; emollient; emulsifying agent; emulsion stabilizing agent; gelling agent; modified-release agent; nonionic surfactant.

Glyceryl monooleate is a polar lipid that swells in water to give several phases with different rheological properties. It is used in topical formulations as an emollient and as an emulsifying agent for water-in-oil emulsions. It is also a stabilizer for oil-in-water emulsions. Glyceryl monooleate gels in excess water, forming a highly ordered cubic phase that can be used to sustain the release of various water-soluble drugs. It is also the basis of mucoadhesive drug delivery systems.
Glyceryl monooleate is reported to enhance transdermal and buccal penetration and it has been investigated in inhalation delivery systems.
Glyceryl monooleate has been investigated for the encapsulation of drugs in liquid crystalline nanoparticles for the entrapment of drugs for oral and ocular delivery.

Odd Chain Fatty Acid C17:0

Margaric Acid (Нeptadecanoic Acid)
CAS-No. 506-12-7

Heptadecanoic acid is naturally present in full-fat dairy and some meats, but modern dietary trends (e.g., low-fat diets) may lead to lower consumption. Supplements help reintroduce this potentially beneficial fatty acid. Higher levels of C17:0 are associated with lower risks of cardiometabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes. It may help improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.
In some studies C17:0 supplementation has been linked to reduced inflammation and it may help lower triglyceride levels, which is a key factor in atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in arteries).
Emerging research suggests saturated fatty acids like heptadecanoic acid may play roles in brain health, possibly by supporting the integrity of cell membranes in neurons.

Heptadecanoic acid supplementation might help in treating or preventing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. It may help in treating hyperferritinemia (excess iron storage) without requiring phlebotomy.
Heptadecanoic acid has been shown to possess antimicrobial.
